🎓 Teacher Licensing Qualifications
​for Infant/Toddler Care in California


To work as a teacher in a licensed infant/toddler care center in California, educators must meet the following basic qualifications:
​

✏️ 12 ECE Units: Completing 12 semester units in Early Childhood Education/Child Development (ECE/CD) from an accredited college. These units must include courses in:
  • Child Growth and Development
  • Child, Family, and Community
  • Program/Curriculum
✏️ 3 Infant/Toddler Units: An additional 3 semester units in Infant/Toddler Care if working with children under 2 years old.
✏️ Experience: At least 6 months of experience working with children in a licensed childcare facility.
✏️ Background Checks & CPR Certification: Must pass a background check and fingerprinting and be certified in Pediatric CPR and First Aid.



Our Teacher as Caregiver must

  1. Build a secure attachment by showing warmth, patience, and affection. 
  2. Apply age-appropriate teaching methods and encourage developmental progress.
  3. Use daily reports, parent conferences, and informal updates to keep parents informed.
  4. Design hands-on, sensory-rich experiences that encourage exploration and creativity.
  5. Adapt teaching methods, routines, and responses based on individual learning styles and family preferences.
  6. Incorporate culturally inclusive activities and honor each child’s background.
